What is MESA?

The MESA Program is a state-funded initiative that supports educationally and economically disadvantaged students in the STEM transfer pipeline. Rooted in the legacy of the civil rights movement, MESA empowers students pursuing degrees in Math, Engineering, Science, and Computer Science by providing resources designed to help them succeed and transfer to top universities.

We proudly serve a diverse student population, with a special focus on first-generation college students. Whether you're aiming to become a doctor, engineer, scientist, or mathematician, MESA is here to support your journey. We also enthusiastically welcome DREAMers to apply.

Steps to Join

Attend the MESA Welcome Meeting: Schedule and attend an introductory meeting to get familiar with the program.

Complete the MESA Orientation: Participate in our orientation to learn about MESA鈥檚 resources and requirements.

Meet with a MESA Counselor: Meet with the MESA counselor each semester to stay on track with your academic goals.

Create an Educational Plan (Ed Plan): Your Ed Plan must reflect a calculus-based STEM transfer major.

Stay Enrolled: Enroll in at least 6 units per semester as outlined in your Ed Plan.

Academic Excellence Workshops (AEWs): Master Your Major

MESA offers Academic Excellence Workshops (AEWs) designed to enhance your understanding of core major courses. AEWs are based on cooperative learning, where students work together in small groups to tackle challenging problems. These workshops are proven to increase grades, foster deeper understanding, and improve attitudes toward learning. They are led by peer facilitators who are trained to guide you through complex concepts and encourage collaboration.

MESA Tutors: Peer Support When You Need It Most

Our team of tutors and AEW facilitators work closely with Physics, Math, and Chemistry faculty to provide focused support on the areas where students typically struggle. Whether you need help solving a difficult problem or just need a little extra guidance, MESA鈥檚 peer-to-peer tutoring ensures that you receive the support you need to succeed.
